Dave Greber uses the fast-paced visual vocabulary of the digital world to create mesmerizing video works. Inspired by the act of setting a dinner table, Stilllives II: Vignette is projected on the floor as though you are looking down at a table being continuously reset. The video features 200 layers, including clips of mugs breaking, splashing paint, unfurling tablecloths, and his dog and cat strolling through the frame. Greber considers his videos “moving paintings,” composed of bright colors, fast cuts, and repetitive imagery.
Greber started his career in commercial video, but found the work to be “psychically violent,” and abandoned it, choosing instead to make a living as a “pedicabber,” a bicycle-based taxi service. He began exhibiting video and installation works at small venues in New Orleans and eventually graduated with an MFA in Digital Arts from Tulane University. His artwork has been exhibited across the country including at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Greber’s unconventional route to becoming an artist speaks to the life-changing power of art.
