About
New Photography in the Lewis Gallery
In the past decade, the Figge Art Museum has experienced significant growth in its collection of fine art photography. Through important gifts of exceptional works from, among others, the collector and fine art dealer Brent Sikkema, to strategic purchases of important works from the 19th and 20th century, the Figge’s collection of fine art photography now represents many of the key trends in photographic history.
New Photography will feature a selection of recently acquired works that span nearly 150 years of the photographic medium. Works by internationally recognized photographers, such as Des Moines-born Gertrude Käsebier, 1852-1934; William Henry Jackson, 1843-1942; Minor White, 1908-1976; Emmet Gowin, b. 1941; and Ann Hamilton, b. 1956, provide a brief survey of photographic history from the classic landscape photographs of the mid-19th century to the conceptually focused works from the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
This exhibiton will be on view November 11, 2017-February 4, 2018.
