Lesley Dill's Wilderness: Light Sizzles Around Me is inspired by 16 historical and fictional figures (1591-1980) all of whom sought peace, justice, or a path to visionary self-expression in tumultuous times. Dill will discuss her roots as a native New Englander and her experience in aiming to include a diverse set of voices whose stories provide us with a more complete portrait of our history.
With poetry as her guide, Dill marries words, process, and form into thought-provoking sculptures. Her portraits use cleverly designed fabric shapes combined with texts by or about her subjects to reveal the essence of their characters.
Unlike traditional portraits where physical likeness is paramount, Dill’s unique works reveal instead something deeper and knowable about each person. The power of her subjects’ words reminds us of the fortitude required for their voices to be heard in their times and underscores why they resonate with us still.
